Haverfordwest County held their annual golf day at Haverfordwest Golf Club recently and in a tense finish a quartet from Carmarthen Golf Club won on count-back from a foursome associated with the Bluebirds’ club.
Organised superbly, as usual, by new Bluebirds’ chairman David Hughes it was Peter Meroney, Keith Elias, Rhodri Gruffydd and Matthew Thomas who set the early pace with a score of 119 points on a course that had been expertly tended by David Kelly and looked an absolute picture.
Early starters were full of praise for the slick, well-manicured greens but most quartets returned cards that were in the 90s as the best three stableford points counted from each team at every hole.
Battling performance by father and son duo
It seemed that the ‘Carmarthen Crew’ might run away with things but then the local duo of Colin Fawcett and Glyn Griffiths, plus their respective sons Liam and Scott, came in with another score of 119 points.
The winners were decided on count-back over the back nine holes and it was the lads from Carmarthen who edged home to receive the beautifully-engraved glasses as special mementoes of the day, plus a polo shirt that dubbed them as 2014 champions of this event.
The Fawcett/Griffiths Gang received specially-engraved glass trophies as their reward for such a good performance and the other awards were for nearest the pin (Luke Morrissey of Exeldent) and the longest drive came from Jake Lewis (Western Telegraph) as everyone enjoyed a superb dinner to round off a thoroughly enjoyable day with Haverfordwest County.
